Dr. Lisa Emery Wins Prestigious NIH Grant for Memory Research

Dr. Lisa Emery (pictured below), an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Appalachian State, has received a three-year Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant, totaling $270,375, is to support Dr. Emery’s research regarding the relationship between mood and memory. Dr. Emery’s research particularly focuses on the mood and memory of older adults. According to Dr. Emery, older people tend to report higher happiness as they age, on average. “My hypothesis,” Dr. Emery says, “ is one of the reasons is that as people age, they forget a lot of the specific negative details about bad things that have happened to them and learn to reframe some those negative experiences in a more positive light.” To test this, Dr. Emery plans to conduct three surveys of up to 150 adults ranging from those in their early 20’s to those over 65.
