Shauna Joyner, a student under the supervision of Dr. Kondrad, presented their joint research in a poster session at the 21st North Carolina Psychology Association Undergraduate Conference. This study titled, "Not getting the point" tested whether four-year-olds could understand true negative pointing gestures, which refers to pointing to where an object is not rather than where it is. Specifically, children were asked to find a sticker hidden under a cup when a researcher said she was going to show them “where it’s not hidden” and then used the true negative point. Results indicated that four-year-olds have trouble with this task, possibly due to the amount of working memory required. These findings provide insight into how children learn from others.
